PREPARATORY WORK FOR BUILDING A SOLID WOOD HOUSE
Even before the foundations are started, a whole series of steps must be completed:
- choose the plot;
- have a geological survey carried out on the site;
- commission the design documentation;
- have the plan of the future building approved by the competent local authorities;
- level the surface of the site and prepare areas for storing materials;
Only after these stages have been completed should the main work of erecting the planned home begin. We recommend following the sequence of works set out below when starting the construction of a house.
FOUNDATION FOR A SOLID WOOD HOUSE
The final result will depend on how well the base is made. Mistakes at the foundation stage can be fatal and may only appear once construction is complete. The following technical points deserve attention:
- the depth and level bottom of the excavation;
- the arrangement of the drainage systems;
- the quality of the concrete;
- the execution of the waterproofing.
The first stage of construction requires strict compliance with the applicable standards. If any point is skipped, cracks and delamination of the concrete base may form, which directly affects the service life of the building.

In our climate it is very important to build a roof that is not only beautiful but also strong, able to withstand every kind of weather. Specialist shops today stock an enormous range of roofing materials, but not every one of these will suit you.
Points that arise when choosing the roofing:
- Not all bitumen shingles are suitable for areas with heavy precipitation and long snowy winters.
- If there is even one place where water gets under the outer layer, freezing can cause it to tear.
- With insufficient thermal insulation and waterproofing, condensation or precipitation can quickly damage and swell plywood, timber and insulation.
- Sound insulation deserves attention, since the comfort of those living on the upper floors depends on it.
- Clay tile is a fairly universal option, suited to European climate conditions.

Plan the type of structural solution. Even at the foundation stage the technical details should be prepared in advance. Timber joists and/or a concrete screed, the type of base layer, insulation — all these questions require careful study even before construction begins.

FAQ
How many years will a solid wood house last?
Many owners of plots who are starting to build are concerned about the service life of a solid timber house — this is the question most often discussed with representatives of construction companies. On average the service life of timber buildings is 50 to 100 years, and it depends largely not on climatic factors but on the quality of the materials used, the correctness of the construction and of the use. Provided it is correctly assembled and regularly cared for, such a building can serve several generations of residents without a major overhaul.
Which is better: a solid wood house or a timber-frame one?
When choosing the building technology, many clients cannot decide which house is better — timber-frame or solid wood. Each of the two structures has its advantages and certain particularities.
From the outside a solid wood house looks very beautiful: no external cladding is applied to such a building, so as not to hide the beauty of the timber facade.
A timber-frame house is a structure of planed boards, clad on the outside and inside with insulation, plywood sheets or OSB boards. The main difference between a timber-frame house and a solid wood one lies in the erection technology. Solid wood walls are laid in tight rows. In a timber-frame house the boards serve as the base, the „skeleton” onto which the cladding or facing is applied.
In terms of reliability and use, the house of solid timber is the better option, since, unlike the timber-frame house, it has no metal-wood-metal joints, which corrode and deform over time.
Can you move into a solid wood house straight away?
If you choose solid wood construction „with settlement”, we recommend waiting up to 12 months for the structure itself to take on its final, „compacted” form. Moving into such a house immediately brings a series of unpleasant consequences.
The alternative is construction in dry glued laminated timber, which allows owners to bring the building into use quickly.
Can you live in a solid wood house in winter?
With a good heating system, a solid wood house with walls from 180 mm thick will keep the warmth even at 40 degrees below zero. Our clients have told us they feel entirely comfortable in a solid wood house in winter, even without a layer of insulation on the walls.
This is no surprise. In general, timber houses hold heat better than brick buildings. Thanks to this, such houses are easy to heat in the cold months: a timber country house warms up quickly and gives off heat slowly. In addition, timber absorbs excess moisture in the room or releases it when the air is too dry.
What is the best way to heat a solid wood house?
The most popular way to heat a solid wood house is gas. Second place is firmly held by electric convectors. Water-based heating systems are also found. It goes without saying that before starting to install the system you need to study in detail the characteristics and properties of all the varieties.
If, in choosing the type of heating, you settle on the water-based option, you will have to decide on the fuel used. Every type has its particularities, which is why you should choose the one that meets your requirements. Sometimes several types can be combined.
When is it better to build a solid wood house: in winter or in summer?
From a technical point of view, the most correct way to proceed when building a solid wood house is as follows:
- lay the foundation in autumn. Even if the pour takes place in frosts of 10–15 degrees, today’s technologies allow special admixtures to be added to the mix that „warm” the concrete until it sets. After three days the base of the house is ready and the frost cannot harm it. Another two weeks later, construction can begin. Another foundation option for a solid wood house is the screw pile;
- in winter erect the walls, floors and rafters and cover the roof;
- in spring wait for the settlement. This time is successfully used to gather the funds for the further building works;
- in summer carry out the finishing works and move in.
