Cost of wooden house walls: what affects the price

Choosing the wall material is one of the most important decisions when building a wooden house. It affects not only the cost, but also the warmth, durability, and appearance of your home. Our wall cost calculator takes into account four key parameters: building area, wall height, material type, and wall thickness. Enter your data — and in just a few minutes you’ll get a detailed estimate.

Profiled Timber

Profiled timber is the optimal price-to-quality solution for private construction. Thanks to the profiled lock joint, it holds heat well and does not require additional caulking. The cost is below the market average.

Glued Laminated Timber

Glued laminated timber is a premium material with minimal shrinkage (less than 1%). It is made from glued layers of wood, which ensures geometric stability. Suitable for permanent-residence houses.

CLT Panels

CLT (Cross-Laminated Timber) is a modern engineered material made of cross-glued layers of wood. It is distinguished by high load-bearing capacity and architectural flexibility. Often chosen for modern and non-standard projects.

Hand-Hewn Log

Hand-hewn log houses are a classic of wooden home building. Each course is worked by hand, which gives every house a unique character. Requires time to settle (1–2 years), but lasts 100+ years.

Round Log

Round log combines the natural beauty of a log house with industrial processing precision. A uniform diameter along the entire length eases installation and reduces labor costs. A popular choice for cottages and country houses.

Wall thickness also significantly affects the cost and
thermal efficiency. For year-round living
the recommended thickness is from 200 mm, for seasonal
houses — from 150 mm.

Use our free calculator to
compare the cost of different materials for your
specific project and make an informed decision.

Standard wall height is 2.7–2.9 m. If you have
a non-standard layout or a second floor —
an individual calculation with a manager is required.

ADVANTAGES OF THE KOLEO CALCULATOR

The KOLEO online calculator is precision, speed, and real construction data — not “average figures from the internet”.

ACCURATE ENGINEERING CALCULATION

Based on real KOLEO production parameters — materials, labor, technology. The result is as close as possible to the actual cost of your house.

PROFESSIONAL SUPPORT

After the calculation, a KOLEO engineer works with you to help clarify details and adapt the estimate to your needs.

GEO-ADAPTATION

The calculator takes into account the climate, soil, logistics, and prices of your region — from Uzhhorod to Kyiv. The calculation reflects the real situation specifically in Ukraine.

FAQ

Profiled timber costs from €279/m² to €419/m² depending on the cross-section. The most budget-friendly option is 160×160 mm timber, the maximum is 240×160 mm.

Glued laminated timber — €509–735/m² — is the most expensive material in the calculator. The high price is explained by complex production: the wood is dried to 8–12% moisture, glued under pressure in layers with cross-oriented fibers. The result is shrinkage of less than 1% and a complete absence of cracking. For a permanent-residence house, this pays off within the first years.

The price of CLT directly depends on panel thickness. Thin 60 mm panels (3 layers) start from €275/m², massive 360 mm panels (9+ layers) go up to €1,080/m². For the exterior walls of a private house, panels of 120–200 mm are usually used, which corresponds to a price of ~€400–600/m².

The prices are very close: hand-hewn log €250–450/m², round log — €255–395/m². But at the same material price, hand-hewn log requires significantly more expensive installation — manual hewing, fitting each course. The total construction cost with hand-hewn log is usually 20–35% higher than with round log.

CLT (Cross-Laminated Timber) is a massive panel made of layers of wood glued perpendicular to each other. Thickness from 60 mm to 360 mm.

It’s suitable if you are building a modern house with large windows and an open layout, want maximally precise geometry without shrinkage, or are planning a non-standard project (complex shape, cantilevers, second floor). Not suitable if you want the classic look of a log house.

For the exterior load-bearing walls of a private house, CLT 120–200 mm (5–7 layers) is usually used. For the climate conditions of most regions of Ukraine, this is sufficient combined with facade insulation. Thickness of 60–80 mm is for interior partitions, 240–360 mm — for multi-story structures.

The calculator asks for the building area — this is the floor area (footprint), i.e. the size of the foundation. For example, 10×12 m = 120 m². The calculator itself calculates the wall area based on the perimeter and the entered wall height.

Enter the height to the ceiling — that is, the height of the exterior wall from the foundation to the wall plate (the start of the roof). For a single-story house, this is usually 2.7–3.2 m. Gables (triangular end walls under the roof) are usually calculated separately and are not included in the base wall calculation.

Each calculation generates a separate PDF for one material. To compare options, run the calculation for each material and save separate reports. You can also use the material comparison table above on this page.
